In class we’ve recently covered fractions and their decimal equivalents and I wanted to find a way to try and support the children to remember 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4.
I thought back to my love of Eminem and the catchy vocals and sample tracks that he used and it got me thinking… OK, maybe Eminem isn’t exactly appropriate for anyone under the age of 18 but could I use this idea to get them remembering decimal equivalents?
Enter the maths rap battle! I found a child friendly backing track on Youtube (there’s loads out there) and made a repetitive ‘rap’ that included the decimal equivalents (although I’m sure Eminem wouldn’t call it this…)
I split the children into two groups, explained the idea of a battle, gave them team names and hey presto, the battle was born! We practised a few times and then I gave them the opportunity to give as much attitude as they wanted for those 2 minutes of the rap battle final.
Guess what? They absolutely LOVED it! Boys especially gave lots of attitude and were dancing and singing like I’ve never seen before.
Take a look at the video and let me know what you think!
